Obtaining structured development processes and taking advantage of modern virtual technology are two of the most exciting challenges facing engineers in the era of short product life cycles and flexible manufacturing. However, there is often a knowledge gap between the theoretical findings and the industrial practice. It is a great challenge to bridge this gap, which is the prime objective of this paper. The paper explains the whole chain from theoretical framework to engineering action in discrete event simulation. Results are presented as definitions of the different steps, from framework, to simulation-supported activities, activity attributes, and simulation methods. Thereafter, a simulation study, carried out at Volvo Car Corporation, is described and the working procedures and lessons learned from the study are mapped to the strategic framework presented. It can be concluded that the overall structure should enable natural integration of virtual manufacturing in the development process and that the working procedures provide sufficient guidance to engineering action.
