Soil solarization is able to induce suppressiveness in solarized soils resulting in a prolonged effect in controlling soilborne pathogens such as Verticillium dahliae (14,16). Thus, soils from solarized fields grown consecutively to Verticillium susceptible hosts could be used to select potential antagonistic rhizosphere bacteria. Based on the evidence (6,7) that root tips are the actual sites of entrance of this vascular parasite, isolation of bacteria from the interior of the root tips of tomatoesor eggplants (endorhizosphere) using King's B and 523 as selective media, was attempted. The main objectives of this work were to: a) isolate endorhizosphere antagonistic bacteria from the root tips. b) create a collection of antagonistic bacteria against Verticillium dahliae; and c) evaluate their antagonistic and biocontrol activity against V. dahliae in vitro and in planta.
