The conservation and reclamation of urban and industrial sites and derelict land have become a very important task (e.g. De Kimpe, Morel 2000), especially in high dense areas of Germany. Little is known about the long neglected man-made soils and materials such as ash, slag bricks, furnace dust and waste amongst others; even the changes in the chemical and physical properties of man-made soils are unknown. The Geological Survey of North Rhine-Westphalia develops a method for mapping (scale 1:5.000or larger) and surveying of these very heterogeneous soils in urban areas. One of the test areas is the city of Krefeld (138 km~2, 250.000 inhabitants, Lower Rhine Basin). More than a dozen thematic maps (scale 1:10.000) have been compiled according to the requirements of land-use, planning and management. The main aim of the project is to establish a method for field investigation and to map the wide range of soils in urban areas including natural soils, slightly modified soils as well as man-made soils and contaminated sites.
