The Yenidze tobacco and cigarette factory in Dresden

A striking structure with an oriental architecture, the Yenidze, rises on the outskirts of the historic city centre. The building was erected at the turn of the last century as a cigarette factory and its architecture was controversial at the time. The entire structure was hit in the bombing raids of 1945 and the main building suffered heavy damage. After emergency repairs cigarette production was resumed in the 1950s. It was not until the early 1990s that a complete renovation and reconstruction could be initiated, which has since been completed. Today, the building is used for various purposes. This paper portrays the essential premises and the approach taken in the renovation and reconstruction of this extraordinary element of the Dresden skyline.
