MOLD LIFE IMPROVEMENT IN PERMANENT MOLD CASTING

Permanent mold (PM) casting process utilizes a reusable metallic mold that consists of mold cavity, metallic cores, cooling and ejection systems. The cost of this tooling is a significant fraction of initial investment. That's why when considering this process, foundry must always add mold life as a factor to the cost of the casting. There are a wide variety of measures may be taken to improve the service performance of a mold and in turn increase the recuperation of the initial investment. Resistant to thermal shock mold materials, protective coatings, release agents, appropriate mold cooling and mold operational temperature control systems are all important, when considering the many options to extend the life of a mold [1,2].
