In May 2010, the new H blast furnace of Tata Steelreached a production of 3.05 Mt in its second year ofoperation.This plant was built within the works of Jamshedpur(India) after a construction period of just 25 monthsby a consortium made of Paul Wurth and its localpartner L&T.The following points can be quoted to justify theachievement of the record project execution timefollowed by remarkable operational indexes.- The project organization had a pyramidal structurebased on a Project Director nominated by all partieswith the responsibility to coordinate the activity of allthe Agencies and take all the relationships with theClient for the execution of the Project, so creating asingle point responsibility towards Tata Steel.-The plant Lay out was drawn making use of a 3 Dmodel, permitting to check in advance possibleinterferences between and within different plant units,accessibility to the various areas and maintainabilityof all the equipment.- The shells of BF, stoves and dust catcher were preassembledin large segments and transported to theerection site from the manufacturing workshoplocated near-by.- The control software developed in India was testedextensively also with the help of an automatic andreal time simulation of field devices and sensors. Thispossibility was provided by a dedicated software tooldeveloped by Paul Wurth for the BF plantsapplication. In this way, it was possible to do anintegrated test of the logics and interlocks amongvarious equipments without waiting the real plantoperation.The design concept , the key points of the projectdevelopment and the operating results are presented in this paper to confirm the Tata Steel “H” BF one ofthe most ambitious Blast Furnace projects eversuccessfully performed in India.
