(13)Overview of the South African Industrial Minerals Industry

A brief overview of South Africa's industrial mineral production and sales is given, which will hopefully facilitate the understanding of this complex industry. South Africa is fortunate to have readily available statistics and other information about its industrial minerals. Of the 50 odd minerals produced in South Africa, 60 per cent by number are in fact industrial mineral commodities. These commodities might look unimportant in value, but the strategic value is of paramount importance to the country.
