Polypropylene fibres (PPF) are commonly used in concrete pavements and floor systems to control plastic shrinkage cracking. They suppress the propagation of cracks and reduce crack-widths. Unfortunately, other important properties - most notably abrasion resistance - can be affected adversely by their use. This paper presents the results of a laboratory investigation into the abrasion resistance of polypropylene fibre reinforced Portland cement concrete, and on the effect of addition of fly ash and silica fume. The abrasion test adopted was based on BS 812 PART 113: 1990. The abrasion resistance of a neat Portland cement PPF concrete was lower than a control with no fibres. Up to half the loss could be recovered by the partial replacement of the cement with 30% fly ash, and all of it with 8% silica fume. A ternary mix containing 8% silica fume and 30% fly ash performed better than the Portland cement mix but was worse than the control.
