Sustainable Remediation across a Portfolio: Looking Ahead through to 2014

Background/Objectives. In 2011, Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) developed a programmatic sustainable remediation guidance (guidance) to establish a consistent approach to evaluate, incorporate and track the benefits of sustainable best management practices (BMPs) across its portfolio of environmental remediation sites. In use for over two years, the guidance has been applied to over 75 sites, yielding systematic implementation and benefits tracking of BMPs during the lifecycle of remediation projects. BMPs implemented have targeted the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, reductions in the generation of liquid and solid waste, enhanced use of renewable energy, boosts to economies local to remediation project sites, and maximization of stakeholder satisfaction, among others. PG&E is striving for continuous sustainability improvement. In 2013, the organization set itself two specific sustainability goals: to reduce GHG emissions from heavy equipment used during remediation and to formally document sustainable practices and performance in environmental project reports.
