Unprecedented groundwater sulfate concentrations (in excess of 20,000 ppm) at a former life sciences laboratory were shown to detrimentally impact the efficiency of microscale ZVI (mZVI) and bioaugmentation studies designed for complete CFC-113 degradation. Biostimulation and bioaugmentation were unsuccessful in the presence of the elevated sulfate and while initial mZVI remediation results were encouraging, complete degradation was not achieved. Site restrictions demand an in situ remediation approach with a limited number of injection mobilizations, which led to a creative approach designed to deliver both a sulfate pre-treatment and CFC-113 remedy concurrently.
