Food-waste amendments were evaluated in bench-scale studies as a green and sustainable alternative in implementation of bioremediation at a site in Tacoma, Washington. Enhanced anaerobic bioremediation (EAB) is generally considered one of the most “green” technologies for cleaning up chlorinated solvent groundwater plumes. However, additional work is being done to minimize the environmental footprint realized during implementation of this technology. One of the most significant impacts to the green profile during EAB implementation is the injection of amendments used to stimulate contaminant biodegradation reactions. EAB is planned for implementation at a large chlorinated solvent source area and plume at the Well 12A Superfund site (Well 12A) in Tacoma, WA. EAB, coupled with in situ thermal treatment and excavation, will be conducted in the residual source area to achieve a 90% reduction in mass discharge of chlorinated volatile organic compounds (VOC) to a large dissolved phase plume. As part of an EAB design, research was conducted to identify suitable food-waste EAB amendment options, including the feedstock or co-products (i.e., glycerin and waste oil) of biodiesel production and crude waste vegetable oil and waste grease from the food industry.
