Above ground anerobic bioreactor systems have been evaluated as an alternative to conventional treatment of 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane (TeCA) and trichloroethene (TCE) from contaminated groundwater. Successful bench scale flowthrough bioreactor studies (3 mL min~(-1)) have led to the development of a pilot scale flowthrough bioreactor system (10 L min~(-1)) to treat extracted groundwater. The goal of the pilot scale study is to provide information to support the full scale treatment plant design. Specific objectives included confirming retention times, evaluating input water pH, nutrient and electron donor adjustments, measuring sludge production and evaluating the importance of iron removal prior to treatment of volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
