The Cost of MTBE Cleanups - Comparisons of Cost Estimates

The cleanup costs resulting from UST sites remains a relevant issue due to the large number of sites contaminated with MTBE in addition to the other constituents of gasoline. Not only are individual site costs important, but the total cost of remediating MTBE sites where no source of cleanup funds or insurance is available is of great concern. This paper updates some previous studies that calculated average cleanup costs, and also presents a synopsis of the total costs associated with "orphan" sites prepared by Martinson and Davidson (2005).The updated costs for this paper are similar to those seen previously and those used by Martinson and Davidson (2005) in their cost evaluation.
