There has been a growing interest in finding a method for continuous improvment of safety management and for measuring safety level. This kind of safety performance self-assessment model is currently being developed at the Institute of Occupational Safety Engineering at the Tampere University of Technology. Self-assessment model was tested at least once in five different organisations, which represent typical Finnish chemical and metal production industry. In three companies, the improvement assessment was carried out after the implementation period. Organisations found many strengths as well as areas for improvement from all of the areas of assessment, even from those which traditionally are not included in safety management. Organisations were satisfied with the model, mainly because it is all-inclusive and considers all sectors of safety activities. On the basis of identified strengths and weaknesses the organization can improve performance and be more competitive and profitable.
