Shanghai, one of the largest cities in the world and with a population of 13.5 million, has been campaigning for reliable public transportation since late 1979's. Today, it becomes one of the greatest place to live and work, not only because of its strong economic opportunities, but also its commitment to enhance the city's public realm, providing a strong social support structure and finding new ways to meet residents' need. Public transportation is the major transportation mode used by most population in Shanghai. In past years, major development of public transportation has occurred and new development for future has been planned. This paper presents some background about the public transit systems in Shanghai. Statistical data regarding the current situation and future prediction are summarized and presented. Current challenges and policy issues are also discussed in the paper.
