Socioeconomic, Land Use and Travel Patterns of Shanghai

Due to the economic and urban development in Shanghai, there have been substantial changes in the urban travel characteristics. Since the transit system failed to keep pace with the rapid economic and urban development, it cannot provide the appropriate transit services to satisfy people's demands. The transit ridership has dropped dramatically in the last several years. With economic growth and expansion of the urban area, more people will rely on motorized modes for their daily commuting. To attract more people to use public transit service, the city needs to develop an integrated rail-based transit system that can carry large amount of passengers with fast, convenient, and comfortable service. To facilitate the development of the transit system, the government needs to review and revise certain transportation and land use policies, and adjust the functions of government organizations for coordinating, integrating and regulating the operations of various transportation modes in the city.
