Certain notable features of the bus transit system related to organisational and operational aspects, and a few important aspects related to the mass rapid transit system development in Chennai City, India were presented. The gist of the features is as follows: 1. It is found that the administrative structure of the bus transit system has facilitated creation of independent administrative units accountable for both their successes and failures. 2. An optimal mix of the limited stop services and ordinary services provided in the bus transit satisfies, the requirements of the long-haul and short-haul trip makers respectively. 3. The 'telescopic' fare structure adopted for both the bus and rail transit systems of the city helps the long-distance commuters, most of whom are captive to transit, to meet the travel expenses without much financial strain. 4. A study on fuel consumption of city buses revealed that, excess turnover (over loading), number of stops per km, and make of the bus, in that order, influence the fuel consumption rate significantly. 5. The government of India has recently made a decision that the share of the cost for urban rail transit system development, for the central and state governments, will be 33% and 67% respectively for enabling faster development of the system. A new rail transit (MRTS) system is now being developed for Chennai City based on the said cost-share basis.
