In the present work, laser surface annealing has been applied to an age-hardened Ni based super alloy Inconed 718 using a 2.5kW CO_2 laser to improve its performance in hydrogen environment. Laser surface annealing can produce a locally slutionized zone at the surface of Inconle 718. In the solutionized zone the age precipitates of gamma' and gamma" are dissolved in the matrix, and thereby the hardness of the solutionized zones is reduced to below 250 Hv from approximately 450 Hv of the aged based metal hardness.
