The freshwater cyanobacteria Microcystis aeruginosa kuetzing emend produces a group of cyclic peptides which are known to be toxic to the southern rootknot nematode, Meloidogyne incognita. An organic compost made of the toxic blue algae suppressed the nematode density when applied into soil around tomato plant. The toxic are termed microcystin and have the general structure cyclo-(D-Ala-L-X-erythro-#beta#-methyl-D-isoAsp-L-Adda-D-isoGlu-N-methyldehydroAla), where Adda refers to the #beta#-amino acid residue of 3-amino-9 methoxyl-2,6,8-trimethyl-10-phenyldeca-4,6-dienoic acid and X and Y represent variable L-amino acids.
