In this paper the distribution of strain rates in the conical part of the die has been calculated depending on drawing speed, initial and final wire diameters, single reduction and die angle. Values of mean strain rates and real strain rates were calculated for a range of the single reduction from 10 to 40 percent and die angles 2 #alpha#=12 degrees, 18 degrees, 24 degrees for the drawing process of low carbon steel wires. Results of theoretical calculations were compared with a computer simulation performed with Forge 2- finite element method software. It has been found that for the single reductions in the range 25 to 35 percent, results of the strain rate calculations from both methods are very close to each other.
