Ultra-life Batteries, Inc. has developed high capacity prismatic lithium manganese dioxide cells with excellent rate performance to -20°C. High surface area, high-density cathodes have enabled significant increases in interfacial area per unitvolume, thereby minimizing transfer resistance at the positive electrode. Ultra-life Batteries has also investigated novel electrolyte systems for low temperature operation. As a result of these developments, Ultra-life is now able to produce a safe 5590battery with 13-14 Ah capacity at a constant 2A current drain, translating to an energy density of > 600 Wh/l. At -20°C more than 80% of the available room temperature capacity can be attained at the 2A rate.
