PURPOSE:To provide manganese dioxide having good discharge performance and good filling property by reacting coarse manganese dioxide with chlorate to partly densify and dehydrating it in an atmosphere of oxygen at high temperature. CONSTITUTION:Sulfuric acid, manganese salt, and chlorate are added to coarse MnO2 having 88% or more MnO2 content obtained by oxidation of densified manganese carbonate to react them. Densified MnO2 which a ratio of MnO2 produced by reaction with chlorate to total MnO2 is a range of 18-24% is prepared. This densified MnO2 is dehydrated in an atmosphere of oxygen at 360-400 deg.C. The ratio of MnO2 produced by chlorate reaction to total MnO2 is almost 18%. Thickness of a mold using this MnO2 is same as that of dehydrated electrolytic manganese dioxide. When the ratio of MnO2 produced by chlorate reaction exceeds 24%, the thickness of the mold is thiner than that of dehydrated electrolytic MnO2 and filling property is improved, but discharge performance is decreased.
