Electro Energy, Inc. (EEI) is developing a novel, bipolar wafer packaging concept for the Ni-MH chemistry. Along with improved components, the goal is to significantly increase the volumetric and gravimetric energy density of this system overconventional designs for potential use in a broad range of military applications. The Ni-NiH battery has emerged as the battery of choice for a number of consumer applications: cellular telephones and laptop computers, and is currently being used by theArmy in the BB-390/A battery. Currently available small portable Ni-MH batteries utilize cells that are fabricated with coiled electrodes inside cylindrical cell housings. The cylindrical cells are typically packaged in prismatic outer housings resultingin a significant packaging inefficiency. This paper describes the progress on the development of a Bipolar Ni-NiH battery to meet BB390/A requirements
