The strong impact of collaboration on modern product development processes resulted in a large variety of communication tools. A couple of video conferencing tools or workflow management systems are available on the market but not all of themsupport the specific functionality for e.g. designers. Collaboration patterns are typical communication relationships which are existing at different points in the development process and are repeated very often. These collaboration patterns can besupported by information and communication technologies by configuring and mediating mixtures of basic communication services together with coordination techniques and infrastructural services. At the Fraunhofer-IAO a collaborative system forcollaboration in highly flexible processes has been developed in order to support the communication needs in a functionality driven environment.
