Hybrid vehicles offer a most efficient way to considerably reduce fuel consumption and emissions. For optimum use of their potential, it is essential to have operating strategies that take into account the efficiencies of all vehicle components as well as the respective driving situation and the behaviour of the driver.To evaluate operating strategies a hardware-in-the-loop testbed for a series hybrid vehicle comprising all essential components (internal combustion engine, generator, battery, and electric traction drives) was built up at the Mechatronics Laboratory ofthe University of Paderborn (MLap), Germany. For testbed control a powerful real-time environment is employed that comprises component control, hardware-in-the-loop simulation as well as energy management and emergency systems.In parallel, we developed complex models that enable us to test operating strategies in the computer quickly and flexibly. This paper will present the testbed, the computer models as well as possible operating strategies for serial hybrid vehicles.
