Detecting the porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSv) infected pig

Detecting PRRSv infection is relatively easy using contemporary diagnostic tools and proper sampling strategies. Discerning the relative importance of PRRSv infection in a herd, however, can be problematic because PRRSv is often found in combination with other pathogens. For this reason, correlating history, production record data, clinical signs, physical examination findings and laboratory test results is essential for accurate diagnosis. This manuscript reviews the diagnostic laboratory tests used to identify PRRSv infection.
