Ozone injection for odor control in facultative/anaerobic lagoons

Facultative lagoons are used extensively for wastewater control on high intensity pig farms. In many applications, recycled lagoon water is used to flush the fresh droppings from the confinement barn to the lagoon. The organic loadings to these lagoons is extremely high, being on the order of 500-900 LB BOD/acre-day (adapted from). By comparison, the municipal wastewater treatment design for odor-free lagoons is 20-50 LB BOD/acre-day. Therefore, the "facultative aerobic" sector of the swine waste storage lagoon is often absent from the process. Since the aerobic and anaerobic Sectors of the lagoon act synergistically to balance pH, digest solids, degrade odor compounds and control pathogens, the conditions in unbalanced lagoons exist for inefficient solids destruction, offending odors, poor natural pathogen control, and poor quality of recycle water. Neighbors of intensive livestock operations, the workers, and animals are thereby subjected to real hazards and nuisance pollution. Some of the physiological responses in persons living near intensive swine operations (and detecting odor) operations include increased tension, depression, anger, fatigue, and confusion. Physical responses to intense odor include nausea, vomiting, headache, shallow breathing, coughing, sleep disturbances, and loss of appetite.
