Caesarian Derived, Colostrum Deprived swine actually had their beginnings as Specific Pathogen Free swine. The SPF program began in the late 1950's based on ideas and procedures developed by Drs. George Young and Norman Underdahl. It grew out of a need for clean seedstock to serve an expanding hog industry. SPF pigs allowed producers to start clean herds or to add new bloodlines to existing herds while eliminating the risk of introducing pig transmitted diseases. Struve Labs began as Merrick Lab in 1961, founded by Dr. Boyd Merrick of Manilla, Iowa. The lab was purchased by Dr. Struve in 1981 and has remained under the same management since that time. The service of raising SPF lab pigs for producers was the main function of the lab for over 30 years.
