The secret of additives is often a tricky combination of polar and unpolar groups. This is true for solvent-born as well as for water-born systems. Unpolar or hydrophobic groups are e.g. alkyl-, aryl-, polypropyleneoxide, polydimethylsiloxane, fluorinated alkyls, etc. Polar groups are carboxl-, hydroxyl-, amino-, ammounium-, sulphate- phosphate-, succinate-, polyethyleneoxide, polyimino-groups and the like.
