The large scale production of inactivated vaccines such as polio and rabies vaccines, using continuous cell lines (CCLs) such as Vero cell line, is still based on a serum- containing media (SCM), at least for the production of biomass (Duchene et al., (1990)). However, the use of serum during the cell proliferation step of the production process, has several disadvantages such as quality variation among lots and high cost. Furthermore, sera are also a potential source of contamination by virus, mycoplasma, BSE agent, etc. For those reasons, the adaptation of animal cells to grow in serum free media (SFM), allows a more controlled and a less risky bioprocess.
