he importance of glutamine as the major apoptotic inductor in batch cultures of an hybridoma cell line has been investigated.The importance of the caspase cascade, as a possible target for apoptosis inhibition, in the signaling of apoptosis in cultures deprived of glutamine has been also studied. The specific peptidic inhibitor of caspases Ac-DEVD-CHO partially inhibited (25%) the apoptotic process while cysteine protease inhibitor Z-VAD-FMK was a much more effective inhibitor of apoptosis (75%).On the other hand, only with the combination of both inhibitors has been possible to make reversible the programed cell death process.
