Comparison of ceftiofur hydrochloride (5mg/kg) and ceftiofur sodium 3mg/kg) as therapy for bacterial pneumonia and encephalitis in nursery age pigs

Ceftiofur hydrochioride (Excenel~(TM) Sterile Suspension) dosed at 5 mg/kg BWT one time was compared to ceftiofur sodium (Naxcel~(TM) Sterile Powder) dosed al 3 mg/kg BWT one to three days as needed as therapy for bacterial pneumonia and encephalitis caused by Streptococcus suis, Type II. The trial was conducted at an offsite nursery with a one lime capacity of 17,000 pigs housed in 18 rooms of approximately 900 head each. The facility was filled in 7 days and managed all in, all out by site. Parameters measured were deaths, culls and daily weight gains (ADG). Pigs in this trial were assigned to 4 rooms (15-18). When clinical signs of pneumonia and encephalitis were observed in pigs housed in rooms 15 and 17 they were treated with ceftiofur sodiumat the rate of 3 mg/kg BWT intramuscularly at 24 hour intervals for one to three days depending on clinical response. Pigs requiring treatment for pneumonia or encephalitis in Rooms 16 and 18 were treated once with 1 mL of ceftiofur hydrochioride (approximately 5 mg/kg BWT) administered intramuscularly. Pigs were weighed at placement and when moved from the nursery to the finisher Room 15 contained nine hundred fifty pigs, Room 16 contained nine hundred twelve. Room 17 contained nine hundred four and Room 18 contained eight hundred thirty-one pigs. All pigs used in this trial were barrows. All were fed similar diets.
