An aerosol method for induction of enzootic porcine pneumonia using in vitro cultured Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae

This paper describes a method of controlled aerosol infection of pigs with in vitro cultured Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae. Five M. hyopneumoniae free piglets aged between 14 and 17 days were exposed by aerosol in groups of 2 and 3 to 10 ml of a 7.2 X 10~8 ccu/ml culture of virulent M. hyopneumoniae (Beaufort strain) over a 40 minute period. The aerosol was created in a specially constructed chamber previously used for the aerosol administration of avian pathogens. All piglets displayed conjunctivitis 14days post-infection and mild coughing was observed in 4 of the piglets after 19 days. Post mortem examination of the lungs was conducted 29 days after aerosol exposure.
