The first report of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) virus isolation in Mexico

The first reports of the isolation of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) in Europe, United States and Canada, forced Mexico from 1991, to intensify the regulatory measures and requirements for pig imports in order to protectthe national swine industry. The economic impact of PRRS on the pork industry, has produced an an intense research effort since 1992, in search of understanding more about the clinical, pathological, biological, molecular, diagnostic and immunological aspects of the disease. Several countries in Europe, North America and Asia have considered PRRS to be a threat to swine producers. Considering this and the constant reports on the spread of the disease throughout the world, we decided to investigate if this viral syndrome affected the Mexican swine herd.
