The present invention describes the characterization and isolation of Mexican strains pertaining to the porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) virus, as well as the obtention of cell permissive clones particular for the spread and isolation thereof. The isolated virus known as Mex 1 and Mex 2 are unable to spread in MARC145 cells, while the determined nucleotide sequence of the protein GP5 only shows an 85% of homology with American vaccine strains from PRRS. The aforementioned PRRS viral strains, as well as the proteins N, GP5 and the nucleotidic sequence coding the same, are useful for the specific detection of infections caused by said porcine viral strains.
