Lectin histochemical binding profile of ileum samples from pigs affected with proliferative enteropathy

Recently Porcine Proliferative Enferopathy (PPE) has been described in Argentina. Research efforts have been focused on the identification and culture of the etiological agent, Lawsonia intracellularis (Li), their sensitivity to antibiotics throughin vitro and field studies and on the pathogenesis of the infection. However, the mechanisms through which Li induce epithelial hyperplasia with the presence of immature columnar epithelial cells without goblet cells, remains unknown. Cell carbohydrates,which are normally found as complex glycoconjugates, seem to play an important role on cell differentiation, cell proliferation and on local defense mechanisms on the mucous epithelium by the production of mucins, a rich O-linked oligosaccharide glycoprotem. Lectins have the ability to bind 10 specific carbohydrate moities and have been used as a tool in the identification of specific sugar residues on the gut goblet cell of newborn, suckling and weaned pigs and cell type-related changes in both the epithelial cell glycocolyx and goblet cell mucins in the normal porcine jejunum and ileum. Besides, its application in formalin fixed paraffin embedded tissues has provided a more accurate recognition of the histogenesis, the degree of differentiation andeven the type of cellular deviation in pathological condition. The purpose of this study was to compare the lectinhistochemical pattern of normal ileum and ileum with different score of PPE lesions.
