ECONOMIC IMPACT OF A MODIFIED-LIVE PRRS VIRUS VACCINE TO CONTROL PRRSV IN GROWING PIGS

Recent studies estimated Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS) to cost the US pork industry 5.60 - 7.60 per pig sold1. Controlled experimental as well as field studies have demonstrated that modified-live virus (MLV) PRRS vaccine can stimulate a protective immune response that generates significant protection against heterologous PRRS Virus (PRRSV) challenge in growing pigs. In these studies vaccinated pigs showed a significant improvement in average daily weight gain, reduction in clinical disease and PRRS associated lung lesions compared to non-vaccinated control animals2'3'4'5. The present field study evaluated the impact of a modified-live virus PRRS vaccine (Ingelvac~R PRRS MLV, Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica, Inc.) for control of naturally occurring heterologous PRRSV infection in growing pigs, measured by live animal performance.
