Selenium is a trace element that is involved in several cellular biochemical pathways and, therefore, is essential for all animals. In a high concentration selenium is also toxic (1) and thus the amount of selenium in animal feed is limited by EU feedlegislation. By contrast, the carry over and load of human food is only limited by general guidelines that prohibit negative impact of any food on health and welfare. Selenium toxicosis in pigs has been reported as being an acute to chronic intoxicationwith high morbidity but low mortality in the course of disease (2). The following case report describes a peracute form of selenium toxicosis leading to an impressive mortality in pigs from different age groups that received a supplementary feed.
