Automated apparatus for measurement of the surface density of electrical charges was designed and built. The signal was produced due to periodic shielding of an electrode situated nearby the investigated surface. After suitable processing of this signal, a voltage was produced; the magnitude of which was proportional to the surface density of the electrical charges. The apparatus allowed the same measurements to be performed by a compensation method. The measurement process in both cases was controlled by a personal computer, which also calculated the results, displayed them and could store them for further processing. Initial measurements with the apparatus were performed in order to check its operation.
