Automated Production of Instructionally Appropriate Scenarios

An approach has been developed that automatically produces meaningful and appropriately difficult scenarios in simulated environments for learning decision making in complex tasks. The process, which employs automated tailoring of human-specified 'base' scenarios, is capable of producing situations that present desired levels of difficulty and desired sets of task and environment issues to an individual learner. The attributes manipulated by the process include static initial conditions, dynamic events that occur during the situation, and conditional effects that depend upon actions of the decision maker. This scenario generation process is embedded within a real-time simulation-based instructional system that monitors individual decision making performance and provides expert assessments and advisement.
