Distributed Simulation of individual combatants under DIS suffered from the rigidity of the protocol data unit structure, with restricted enumerations to represent individual postures, activities, and other pertinent data. Simulation using PDUs concentrated on trying to define the minimal information needed to be shared across a network to support individual combatant analytic simulation, as the bandwidth requirements for high-resolution simulation of the individual quickly become prohibitive. HLA offers some relief to these problems, but the solution forces us to expend a lot more effort defining what data need to be shared how often these data need to be updated, and who needs to receive them. This paper examines the issues involved in defining an individual warrior Federation OBJECT Model (FOM) and associated Simulation Object Models (SOMs) from the perspective of supporting distributed simulation for Research, Development and Acquisition (RDA) applications.
