THE ROLE OF COMMANDER MANIPULATOR IN BNFL'S INTERMEDIATE LEVEL WASTE STRATEGY

This paper provides an overview of BNFL's Intermediate Level Waste (ILW) strategy and the corresponding requirements for a heavy duty manipulator. An insight is given to the design and development of the "Commander" Manipulator and the methods used to determine manipulator configurations for different applications. A review of the Silo Emptying Project demonstrates the potential for use of 3D modelling and simulation techniques in the design of manipulator work areas. The paper concludes with future robotics developments within BNFL.
