The Japan Nuclear Cycle Development Institute (JNC) has been developing a new method of effluent processing by begitable insoluble tannin (insoluble tannin). The conventional treatment-process for the effluents containing plutonium in JNC is composed of the coagulation and sedimentation, the active carbon adsorption, and the chelate absorption after neutralizing and straining effluent. The secondary by-products including plutonium such as slurries, chelate resin, active carbon are stored as radioactive wastes. The treatment method by insoluble tannin is expected to minimize the production of secondary -waste products and provides a high decontamination performance. Some kinds of essential tests were conducted for the purpose of obtaining information of the adsorption characteristics of insoluble tannin for plutonium. After these tests the demonstration test including a heating test for used insoluble tannin were carried out in which effluents containing plutonium from MOX fuel fabrication facilities in JNC Tokai-works were used. From the results of these tests, it is expected that the treatment method by insoluble tannin for effluent containing plutonium is applied to plutonium facility such as the MOX fuel fabrication facility practically.
