THE IAEA ACTIVITY IN THE FIELD OF MANAGEMENT OF RADIOACTIVE WASTE FROM NUCLEAR APPLICATIONS

The subject of management of radioactive waste from nuclear applications by its nature is very broad and versatile. The variety of waste types from different applications of radioisotopes and radiation sources is very wide, which is defined by very wide spectrum of nuclear applications in industry, medicine, radiochemical and biomedical research and education. A wide range of technologies are available for treatment and conditioning of these waste, depending on its characteristics, scale of production, existing regulations, economic and other factors to be taken into account. Recognizing the importance of this subject for the majority if its Member States the IAEA during many years is implementing a comprehensive program on all aspects of management of radioactive waste from different nuclear applications. The main objective of this Agency's activity is to review different technical and organizational options and provide practical guidance on the management of radioactive waste that may arise in medical, industrial and research facilities. The paper provides information on ongoing activity of the Agency in the area of management of radioactive waste from different nuclear applications.
