Cellulosic mixed solid wastes (e.g. filter paper, tissue paper, protective cloths...) are widely originated in huge amount from nuclear, medical, agriculture and many other applications. These wastes are representing a serious pollutant for man and his environment and, therefore, should be treated before its release. In Egypt, as in many other countries: incineration, pyrolysis, acid digestion are widely used techniques for the treatment process of these wastes. In our laboratory wet oxidative degradation technique was developed for the treatment of organic wastes (e.g. cellulosic materials, spent ion exchange resins, spent liquid scintillator). The main aims of this treatment process is to achieve an acceptable weight and volume reduction and consequently increase the disposal site capacity. Also through this technique the organic portion of these waste converts to a form suitable for subsequent immobilization into solid matrix (cement, polymer...). In this study oxidative degradation of tissue paper, (simulating the cellulosic waste), was carried out on laboratory scale at ~100°C and at atmospheric pressure using 35% hydrogen peroxide as oxidant. Elemental analysis and IR-Spectroscopy were performed to follow the oxidation route. The role of increasing the amount of hydrogen peroxide added on the oxidation process was studied. The effect of type and concentration of catalyst was also studied to evaluate the oxidation process. Based on the IR- and elemental analysis, it could be stated that the oxidation process of tissue paper results, mainly, in carbon oxides, water and some insoluble inorganic residues. High weight and volume reduction for the solid waste oxidized was reached.
