An energy component has been incorporated into a previously developed two-dimensional bioremediation simulator to explore subsurface temperature variation and bioattenuation. Simulated temperature profiles in the unsaturated and saturated zones match general field data trends from 1995 to 1996. Elevated temperatures near the source area have been observed which may be attributable to the biological transformation of contaminants, an exothermic biochemical reaction. Simulations of hypothetical bioattenuation scenarios suggest that measurable heat production from biomass is thermody-namically possible but is limited by electron acceptor bioavailability.
