The dramatic increase in atmospheric CO_2 over the last hundred years has contributed to the global Green House Effect. Various possibilities have been discussed and proposed to deal with this problem. Unfortunately, to date little has been achieved. Microalgal biomass productivity of 0.2 - 0,4 t d~-1 ha~-1 or 70 - 130 t a~-1 ha~-1 is quite realistic under optimum climatic conditions. This provides a CO_2 fixation capacity per ha of 0,4 - 0,7 t d~-1 or 140 - 260 t y~-1 which is much higher than that of vascular plants. Because of this, renewed interest in microalgal CO_2 fixation prompted recent studies in Japan and Germany.
