The present study strongly suggested that steam produced along with methanol in the hydrogenation of CO_2 over Cu/ZnO-based multicomponent catalysts should accelerate the crystallization of the metal oxides, especially ZnO, contained in the catalysts to result in the deactivation of the catalysts. A small amount of silica added to the catalysts was found to improve the long-term stability of the catalysts by suppressing the crystallization of ZnO in the catalyst.
