It has been found that a two-stage process which first employs dissolving carbon dioxide in fresh or salt water to form an inorganic "CO_2 getter", followed by a CO_2 hydrate formation step can be a very effective process for separating CO_2 from shifted synthesis gas streams. This process requires gases at temperatures near 0 deg C and pressures from 10 to 70 atmospheres, depending on the other gases presnet, and the partial pressure of CO_2 in the gas stream.
