The osteoclast is the principal, if not exclusive, resorptive cell of bone and is a member of the monocyte/macrophage family. The osteoclast mononuclear precursor arises in the marrow, enters the circulation, and homes to bone where it undergoes multinucleation and achieves the resorptivephenotype.
